Oldham County police said David Schmidthuber and his 14-year-old son, Steven, were hunting on private property in the 2000 block of Rebel Ridge Road about 7 a.m. Sunday when they got separated.
When the father noticed some movement in the woods, he fired a 12-gauge shotgun, accidentally killing his son, police said.
Father Kills Son in Hunting Accident After Mistaking Him for Turkey
Sunday, April 20, 2008
The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.
Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.
Accident or not they should both be charged with negligible manslaughter.
When hunting with your child he stays by your side,
you don't let him out of your sight
you don't shoot at what you cant see.
As my uncle did when I was a kid.
No wonder people call for gun controls.
Ironically Klaseus named his son Hunter, I guess he wasn't named after him.
My heartfelt sympathies to the mothers who have to live with the aftermath of these
preventable senseless tragedies.
